Tanneron photo tanneron.jpg (7 k) This little village sits on the top of a hill in the middle of a huge forest of mimosa. Tanneron is at the eastern edge of the Var, next to the village of Auribeau-sur-Siagne in the Alpes-Maritime. As lovely as this region is, Tanneron isn't a typical tourist site, and much of the large population (of over 1000) reside in the surrounding area rather than in the center of the village, including in 13 naerby forest hamlets

From different parts of the village sitting up on the hill, there is a view in nearly every direction, including all the way up the front of the hills to the northeast past the "Baus" of Vence and St. Jeannet to the beginnings of the Alps.

The small central village has a bread shop and grocery store and a couple of cafés. There's even a hairdressers, so you don't have to drive down to the valley to get ready for your evening out.

Nearby sites include as waterfall (the Cascade de la Siagne) down the hill at St. Cassien to the northeast.

History

Name
First record, 1200 Castrum Tannaroni . The origin of the name is either from "tan", the bark of the oak (Chêne) and the Chestnut (Châtaignier), or the pre-european word "tan" for mountain.

Gallo-Roman: there are traces of pre-Roman occupation at the oppidum of Peygros, 3 km to the northeast.

Medieval: The area was ruled by the Seigneurie de Grasse. In 1825, the commune of Tanneron was separated from Callian.

Camping

There are some campsites down at the Lac de St.Cassien, 8 km to the west.

Other campsites are located along the Siagne river above and below Auribeau-sur-Siagne. (Campsites)

Hiking

Maps:

The village isn't a great spot for hiking, except on the small roads, because much of the surrounding mimosa forests are cultivated and protected. There are, however, several trails nearby, including down at the Lac de St. Cassien to the west, and the Grande Randonnée GR51 trail that passes through Auribeau and along the Siagne river about 3 km down the hill to the east.
