This is a very tiny village, very compact and pretty, sitting on the side of the hill
as you approach Castellane from the direction of Grasse.
La Batie is too tiny to have a center square with an outdoor café,
but the surrounding hills are beautiful.
The road through the village continues back into the hills to the Esteron valley,
to St. Auban and the Clue de St. Auban as well as other mountains, valleys, tiny villages and even tinier roads.
As you pass through La Batie on the main road, you could have stopped to buy some
fromage de chèvre (goat cheese). We never did, and now it's too late (Jan 1999). We had a note from the proprietor telling us:
"Please take note: threatened by a neighbor's gun, mad over our goats, we no longer produce cheese (alas!)"
Still, it's a lovely and peaceful place, and great for walking and relaxing.
